Diary of a Hausfrau-Day 249

Pardon the mess. We’re moving. We haven’t found a new apartment, but we’re staying with some friends until we do. It’s strange thinking about having roommates after being married, especially since I still consider us newly weds. Despite the things I’m worried about I know it’s going to alleviate some of my feelings of isolation and it’s going to be an opportunity to build a deeper sense of community. So bring it on…all of it.

We’ll be painting this weekend and hopefully getting to enjoy a little bit of Weindorf :) It’ll be a nice farewell to living in the center of Würzburg.

I thought I was going to be more motivated and excited to pack, but to be honest I’m not. Boo. So enough procrastinating…I’m out.

Diary of a Hausfrau-Day 243: Catching up

Phew, the past 3 1/2 weeks that Matt and I have been back have had lots of ups, downs and several doctors appointments. Nothing serious, but at this point it’s become comical! Between Matt and I we’ve had to go to 7 doctors visits not including my routine eye exam.

So we’ve had to learn some new words:

Lymph nodes: die Lymphdrüsen

Mosquito bite: der Mückenstich

Vaccination: die Impfung

Infection: die Infektion

Harmless: harmlos

Compress: der Umschlag

Near vision/reading glasses: Nahbrille

Distance glasses: Fernbrille

Wow, when listed all together like that it sounds like we had some horrible things going on. I promise it wasn’t. Just an infected wound, huge allergic reactions to bug bites and antibiotics and possibly glandular fever.

All this to say…we had to make some adjustments in what we get to do, and I never got to put up some photos from our refreshing time in VA! So here they are…

Hanging out at Shilla’s Bakery in Maryland. Splitting a Green Tea Bing Soo with a friend - One of the first moments Matt knew our vacation was going to be worth it!

Celebrating Easter Sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial held by Capital Church. Being able to worship God with 6,000-7,000 people moves my heart beyond explanation.

Throwing a party for our friends in VA that couldn’t attend the wedding in London.

Emily did the flowers again for our party. Fab as usual :)

Some of the hands behind W&W hanging out after our post-wedding soiree in D.C. Yes, those pants I’m wearing are from W&W! One of my favorite things I brought back to Germany with me!

Hanging out at District in DC for Sunglass Sundays with my brother (JP), Buki and my mom for brunch. House music and burritos just before church anyone?

Of course there was eating…lots and lots.

We went to Oriental East on the first Saturday we got into town for dim sum, and probably more importantly to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Yes, the dim sum is worth getting up early and lining up for on a Saturday afternoon. Even when you were up for about 30 hours the day before and getting over jetlag.

Oe Gad Gib in Arlington for all you can eat Korean BBQ.

La Caraquena in Falls Church. I can’t remember what I ordered, but I’m fairly sure it was the best thing I could have picked since it had a whole lot of goodness in one dish. Everything we ordered was really good including the wine and don’t forget the Quatros Leches for dessert.

I finally got to take Matt to Acqua al Due in DC! It feels like I’ve been able to take everyone but him including his parents and old flatmate from London. Make sure you say hi to Ralph (co-owner) and Sophie (my fave waitress there) if you get a chance ;)

So it was without a doubt an awesome vacation. Our hearts were warmed spending time with friends and family, our spirits encouraged and our bellies probably a bit too full. We got to meet 4 babies, including a new niece of mine. Plus, we got to change my name with Social Security, the VA DMV, my financial institutions and added Matt to my bank account. Wow…good thing we had a couple weeks to enjoy it all.

Since getting back we’ve gone through The Hunger Games. We’ve tried the Twilight series which I gave up on before finishing the third book. And I started reading Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan. Seems like a fun book and I’m going to give the recipes a try…a bit like Julie and Julia. It’s set in North London near where I used to live, so I think I’m definitely going to enjoy it! Watch this space for my attempts at the recipes.

New veggies are showing up in the market, so I’ve been giving them a try. This week I bought some Asparagus, New Potatoes and Rhubarb.

Yesterday we had New Potatoes served with oven roasted Asparagus and baked Salmon. This Salmon recipe made it possible for me to eat dill again after I was in Russia for 3 weeks and they served dill with everything. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when it was sprinkled over my rice! To give it a try coat the salmon in olive oil, salt, pepper and dill then bake at 220ºC for about 15 mins. The Asparagus can go in just before the salmon; for the Asparagus coat in olive oil then sprinkle with salt, pepper and minced garlic for about 20 mins at 220ºC. Matt made the potatoes. After slicing them he threw them into a pan with some chicken broth then drained them and lightly fried them with a couple gloves of garlic.

Since it was a holiday for the Ascension of Christ we had a pre-dinner Kaffee und Kuchen at the Cafehaus Brückebäck. I had a Nutella latte and cheesecake. Matt had a latte with a Hazelnut cream cake. The view from this cafe is…well, take a look for yourself:

On that note, I’m out. Thanks for giving me a chance to fill you in on what we’ve been up to. Schönes Wochenende. May God bless you to know him more :)
